Eastern Orphean Warbler - a new breeder for Serbia

Bujanovac, the river Pcinja valley. Between 3rd and 6th May 2007, members od Belgrade research society (Marko Rakovic and Boris Novakovic) and BSSRS “Josif Pancic” (Marko Sciban) visited various habitats in wider area of the Pcinja valley. During that time we visited wider surroundings of the monastery St. Prohor Pcinjski (villages Gornji Starac, Jablanica, Vogance, Delinovci), mountain Kozjak, villages Klenike, locality Vrzje stene near the town Trgoviste, villages around the town Bujanovac and locality Livade SW from the town (wet meadows).

During our visit to the village Vogance (UTM EM78) on 4th May we encountered and photographed one adult Eastern Orphean Warbler (Sylvia crassirostris) carrying a nesting material on several occasions. Bird was obviously building a nest in a large blueberry bush. Together with the first observation of this species by Marko Rakovic and Ivan Medenica in the middle of April 2007 not far away from Trgovste (UTM EM89), these are the first observations in this part of Serbia. At the same time, this is the first confirmed breeding for Serbia.

Beside this find, big number of very valuable data about bird fauna of this region has been collected, including new breeding localities for Black-eared Wheatear (Oenanthe hispanica), Rock Thrush (Monticola saxatilis), Eastern Bonellis Warbler (Phylloscopus orientalis), Rock Bunting (Emberiza cia), Icterine Warbler (Hippolais icterina) and many others. Marko Sciban
