Bird-ringing camp “Mrtva Tisa 2007“

In period between 5th and 30th August 2007 Biology student study and research society “Josif Pancic” organizes bird ringing camp on the Mrtva Tisa oxbow near the village of Backo Gradiste (Vojvodina, N Serbia). The camp will be settled in the cottage settlement Donji Boronj on the right side of the river. Ringers will sleep partially in the cottages or in the tents, it depends upon the number of present people. This is the fourth bird-ringing camp of the BSSRS on this location, where we ringed over 1000 birds during last 4 years.

During 25 days of the camp, we plan to use over 15 mist nets on one of the biggest migration stopovers for Swallows/Sand Martins and warblers in Vojvodina. Special and very successful method of bird catching is above the water which was tried last year (20-50 birds per day with one mist net) with just one net, now will be represented with at least 5. Together with other methods (callers, etc.), we will certainly capture at least 100 birds every day. The number of used mist nets will depend from the number of ringers. For now, it is certainly that there will be several foreigners on the camp (from Poland, UK), so we plan make this camp international. Beside the ringing of birds which is the main activity, interested activists also have an option to comitt their research in the wider surrounding of the camp. Flooded woods around the river Tisa on and downstream from the Biserno Ostrvo (captured land between the river Tisa and the Mrtva Tisa oxbow), surely allows a wide range of research activites. But, since there is a plan to put the Mrtva Tisa oxbow under protection, every research in it’s vicinity would help this project and therefore they are more then welcome.

On this occasion everybody interested in joining and actively working  or learning to ring birds, to fill this application list and send it to the coordinator sciban@eunet.yu until 19th July.
