“Josif Pančić“ Biology Student Scientific and Research Society (BSSRS ″Josif Pančić″)

 

A significant aspect of students’ engagement and their interests satisfaction are enabled trough the activity of BSSRS ″Josif Pančić″. BSSRS ″Josif Pančić″was founded in 1973, as a result of many years’ effort of students and staff of the then existing Biology institute. The Society functions formally since 1983, and gathers students of biology, ecology, biochemistry and others who wish to be involved in scientific research, environmental protection or education. As society members, students are enabled, with the assistance of professors and assistants, to more concretely learn about principles and methods of scientific research, to actively participate in scientific work, to test their ideas and present their results on student  meetings and other symposiums, satisfying in that way interests that were not approached in detail during regular studies.

An important decision of the society was to start а cooperation with professors working at the Biology and ecology Department. For the functioning of this cooperation the society is grateful to the current coordinators of the society, assistant mr Goran Anackov, and prof. dr Ante Vujic.

 

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Every year BSSRS ″Josif Pančić″organizes several scientific-research camps. By participating in these camps students can acquire necessary experience on the field and in the research process, specializing and obtaining more knowledge in the field of their interest. Important aspects of these camps are also the obtained results that become available to the general public through scientific publications, written by participating students.

 

CAMPS ORGANISED IN THE LAST FEW YEARS

 

Special reserve “Zasavica”

Society’s activities in the “Zasavica” special nature reserve started in July of 2003. From then on, every year, in cooperation with Pokret Gorana from Sremska Mitrovica, scientific research camps are organized with participating students who, with great enthusiasm and good accomplishments, are getting acquainted with the life of the reserve.

In year 2006 at Zasavica there were two research camps. The first was with students carrying out their research in a variety of fields, while the other was a specialized for bird-ringing camp and constructing artificial homes for birds that inhabit tree-holes. In year 2007 a continuing active cooperation is expected with “Zasavica” special reserve.

 

Pčinja

“River Pcinja Valley” - area officially categorized as a landscape of exceptional quality and variety – 2nd category.

In the year 2006 a scientific research camp Pčinja 2006. was organized, with the expert help of professors from the Department of Biology and Ecology and the Institute for Nature Protection. On this occasion, the members organized a 15 days- lasting expedition in the Pčinja river basin. Particular results are to be published in local or foreign papers.

During the year 2007 several camps and summer expedition are planed, and on their basis the seasonal dynamics of flora and fauna will be observed. There will also be specialized research carried out on particular species with the expert help from the Department of Biology and Ecology, the Institute for Nature Protection of Serbia and the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković”.

 

Special Nature Reserve “Gornje Podunavlje”

The cooperation with “Gornje Podunavlje” special nature reserve began in 2004 when a scientific research camp was carried out in the period from 14 to 26. July, with participating members of BSSRS ″Josif Pančić″ and members of the Society of Young Researchers of the Institute of Geography “Branislav Bukurov” from PMF Novi Sad. The members of the action were situated at the primary school in Backi Monostor. The crowning moment of this action was the exhibit of photographs, opened by Silard Kovač, and a movie premier that was filmed during the camp in cooperation with Kino Club Novi Sad. The cooperation with “Gornje podunavlje” special nature  reserve continued throughout the year 2005. through scientific research of the Society and volunteer working camps in cooperation with the Volunteer Center of Vojvodina.

Successful actions in year 2006:

  • “Zastitijada”

For the last 3 years, BSSRS “Josif Pancic” members actively participates in organization and realization of “Regional Student Ecology and Environmental Protection Meetings”, where our members also accomplished significant results in science and sports. “Zastitijada” is organized in cooperation with ZOSEKIZA (Union of student environmental organizations).

  • Let’s save a tree

The action includes gathering paper for recycling at the department of biology and ecology in cooperation with “Papir Servis Novi Sad”. The project is planned to broaden on the Faculty of Natural Sciences, and eventually include the whole University.

  • Promotion of renewable energy sources -   a continuance of successful joint project of BSSRS “Josif Pancic” and the Volunteer Center of Vojvodina, as a part of the Climate Youth Network

  • Cleansing of Slano Kopovo, Okanj pond, Rusanda Lake – as an example of active natural protection and promotion of the biological and tourist value of these sites.

  • Placing artificial homes for owls and bats in the campus area.

  • Equipping and maintaining the expose aquarium with autochthon species of fish.

  • Organizing lectures on the department of Biology and Ecology in cooperation with the Bird Study and Protection Society of Vojvodina, Novi Sad

  • Restoration of the “Jungle” – the club of the students of biology and ecology

  • The weekend of pellet gathering – a course of gathering, processing and determination of pellet content of owls and raptors

  • Bird-ringing camps on Mtrva Tisa, Valdanos, Vrdnik, Zasavica,…

 

The Annual Assembly of the Society

The formal annual assembly of BSSRS “Josif Pancic” is organized every year with a goal to inform professors, coworkers and students and all those concerned, about the work and results of the Society during the previous year, and presenting the newly-elected presidency and the society president.

 

Motivation weekends

Every year the society organizes a motivation weekend on Fruska gora (Glavica, Strazilovo) which enables new members to get better acquainted with other members and the activities carried of the society, in the course of relaxing walks in the Nature.
